Mesdan's Cotton Stickiness testing method was awarded with
the official ITMF-ICCTM
recognition, herewith attached.
The recognised Mesdan's Stickiness Testing Method is in compliance with the international testing standard EN 14278-3 and it is an integral part of the CONTEST-S and CONTEST-F equipment.
Following the Worldwide Coronavirus crisis and market demand for protective face masks testing, Mesdan developed a Protective Mask Testing kit according to EN 14683:2019 and ASTM F2100:2019, both referring to the differential pressure measurement.
The Mask Testing Kit can be supplied as an option along a new Mesdan's AIR TRONIC - Air Permeability Tester or installed on an existing unit.
Mesdan-Lab at the forefront of cotton fibre testing technology expanding its product range with two important achievements: CONTEST®-S and CONTEST®-F
Loepfe laboratory line has been developed in cooperation with Mesdan. Since the launch of the Loepfe FIBERMAP® and YARNMAP®, valuable customer feedback has been collected. During this period, a clearer picture of the customer wishes and needs has been collected and important fine-tuning improvements achieved.
In order to take advantage of both companies expertise and distribute the development efforts within the group more evenly, it has been decided that Mesdan is going to continue the development of the fiber testing instrument whereas Loepfe is going to resume the work for the all-in-one yarn testing instrument.
Following this group strategy, Mesdan have upgraded the former FIBERMAP® and designed a new instrument named CONTEST®-F measuring at the same time both the cotton fiber properties and cotton stickiness (honeydew/sugar content).
In order to meet the market demand, the former 2015 version of CONTEST® was redesigned into CONTEST®-S shrinking its original application to Stickiness measurement and grading only. The development of the all-in-one yarn testing instrument Loepfe LabMaster YARNMAP® will be continued by Loepfe Brothers, famous for its online yarn quality control systems.
With this decision, Mesdan and Loepfe underline their commitment to their laboratory product lines with the synergy of two dedicated development teams.
If "sticky cotton" is not detected in time and properly handled, it can generate excessive maintenance costs in spinning, affect the production and compromise yarn quality.
Mesdan-Lab introduces the CONTEST®-S
CONTEST®-S is on display at ITMA (Barcelona, 2019, June 20-26) at the Mesdan stand n. A210b in H7 hall, together with the full range of laboratory equipment for spinning. Mesdan's yarn splicer are showcase as well.
As experienced in spinning mills all over the world, stickiness affects both productivity and quality parameters. The establishment of thresholds for spinning sticky cotton would therefore be a great advantage to the spinning industry.
However, several studies demonstrated up to now that such a critical single threshold is really unlikely to be achieved for worldwide spinning, since each mill has its own typical machinery, knowledge and economical conditions that enable different level of tolerance. On this basis, it is therefore difficult to evaluate accurately the economic impact of stickiness on the spinning industry, as well as a determination of discounts that should be applied to sticky cottons in a rational manner.
A reasonable solution seems to be a threshold classification, which should be set by every customer on the basis of his own experience and ability to process fibers of a given stickiness.
The problem is that, so far the technology available on the market could not give spinners an efficient, reliable and scientific tool, able to give consistent information about the cotton fiber stickiness and the real risks for the spinning machineries. CONTEST-S® is a new Mesdan-Lab equipment, today available for the sales, able to provide spinners, classing institutes, traders and farmers, that precious information.
The operator feeds a 3.5 g sample, which is processed into a 10 m fine fiber web, delivered to the Stickiness Tester, where it is pressed in between two heated drums. The sticky deposits adhering on the drum surface are optically inspected and the drums are automatically cleaned. Drums of stickiness tester are heated at 35-37°C, thus simulating the production machines temperatures, and detecting at the same time the most critic sticky components among the different origins.
The Stickiness Tester can detect the stickiness content affecting the spinning process, thus providing a Stickiness Risk Probability on the basis of its "grade", a parameter considering both the number of sticky points and their sizes. It enables spinners to decide in advance how to process and blend the different cotton bales, and traders to give bales the most suitable value, and allocate them to the right customers.

When yarn breaks there are only two options: tie a knot or splice it knotless.
Mesdan splicing solutions in both hand-operated and automatic versions aim to improve production efficiency, increase yarn quality, optimise yarn clearing performances, widen machine versatility and reduce waste. The ultimate goal is to produce a defect-free fabric.
Hot air as a splicing medium in combination with two complementary splicing blasts enables superior quality joints on a variety of yarns included those considered very difficult to join with the traditional air splicer such as MVS/Vortex yarns, synthetic OE (single and plied), multiply sewing threads and so on.
Furthermore, the Hot Jointair is the most advanced splicing solution for wool yarns as well as for luxury yarns such as cashmere, silk, angora, vicunha, etc. Two models are available: one for fine worsted counts, and the other for woollen and fancy yarns.
The Hot Jointair is available in two versions, automatic version fitted on Savio automatic winders (such as Polar Evo or Eco Pulsars) or in the hand-operated version fitted on a special A.T.S. rail system (Air Track Supply).
In the hand opertaed version, the Hot Jointair are installed on all machines downstream single yarn winding suh as assembly winding, twisting, warping, knitting, etc.
